Prenatal and Postnatal Massage in Medellín
Updated: 2 days ago
Pregnancy changes the body in many ways. As a baby grows, back discomfort, tight shoulders, tired legs, and restless nights can become part of everyday life. After birth, a different stage begins: physical recovery, new routines, and the demands of caring for a newborn.
Prenatal and postnatal massage can offer a welcome moment of comfort during these transitions. At IVY Wellness Center in Laureles, Medellín, this service focuses on relaxation and easing muscle tension as a complement to regular medical care. Here are the evidence, expectations, and precautions.

Is it safe?
Safety depends on health, technique, and training. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recognizes massage as a way to relax during pregnancy and recommends side-lying as a comfortable position.
IVY does not recommend massage during the first three months of pregnancy. From the fourth month onward, clients can ask about an adapted session. This is the center's precautionary policy, not a universal medical prohibition.
Before booking, mention a high-risk pregnancy, high blood pressure, preeclampsia, bleeding, a history of blood clots, or specific advice from your obstetric clinician. Deep pressure on the legs, abdomen, or painful areas should be avoided. Sudden swelling or pain in one leg, chest pain, breathlessness, heavy bleeding, or a severe headache requires urgent medical attention, not a massage appointment.
After delivery, ask your healthcare professional when a massage is appropriate if you have had a cesarean, significant tears, infection, or another complication. Incisions and healing scars should not be massaged without medical clearance.

What does scientific research say?
A systematic review of 12 randomized trials, published by Mueller and Grunwald in the Journal of Clinical Medicine in 2021, reported encouraging findings for stress, back and leg pain, and some emotional symptoms. However, the studies had limitations and mainly involved uncomplicated pregnancies beginning at or after 12 weeks.
A separate systematic review and meta-analysis published in Midwifery in 2020 suggested reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms compared with usual care. Importantly, none of the included trials had a low risk of bias. Massage may be helpful, but it is not a substitute for medical or mental-health treatment, and benefits should not be presented as guaranteed.
Postnatal massage: comfort during recovery after childbirth
Following birth, many women experience fatigue, shoulder tightness, and back discomfort. A carefully adapted postnatal massage may help them feel more comfortable and relaxed. It should not be marketed as a way to speed wound healing, eliminate swelling, or restore a particular body shape.
A 2026 randomized trial involving 112 women, led by Yamasaki and colleagues and published in the European Journal of Midwifery, found short-term improvements in selected physical symptoms and mood measures after massage during hospitalization following vaginal birth. The findings come from one center and do not establish lasting effects or apply automatically after cesarean birth.
Persistent sadness, severe anxiety, or difficulty managing daily life deserves professional assessment. Massage does not treat postpartum depression.
Why consider massage during pregnancy?
1. Ease back, neck, and leg tension
As pregnancy progresses, the body's center of gravity shifts and muscles and joints work differently. Lower-back aches, neck tightness, and tired-feeling legs may follow. Gentle massage may provide short-term relief from some of these symptoms and make it easier to feel comfortable. Severe or persistent pain still needs assessment by a healthcare professional.
2. Create a genuine opportunity to unwind
Sleep changes and childbirth expectations may add emotional pressure. Quiet time, attentive touch, and an environment where the body feels supported may reduce perceived stress. Massage cannot remove every source of worry, but it can offer a manageable way to pause.
3. Support more comfortable rest
Some women notice that reduced muscle tension makes it easier to relax at bedtime. Massage does not cure insomnia or guarantee better sleep; results vary with comfort, routines, and other factors.
4. Make space for the mother's needs
Regular prenatal care remains essential. Setting aside time for comfort can complement it without adding another obligation. Is prenatal or postnatal massage safe?
What to expect during your session at IVY Wellness Center
A session begins with a brief conversation about your pregnancy stage or how long it has been since delivery, your comfort, and any medical guidance. Your therapist adjusts pillows, positioning, and pressure accordingly. During pregnancy, lying on your side is often the preferred option.
You can request lighter pressure, reposition, or stop; never push through pain. Session length and availability can be confirmed when you book.
